One of the themes that I am really trying to drive home is stopping to absorb the present because what was then can seem so much more important now when it has disappeared forever. This short story makes an effort to capture the critical nature of certain decisions, and how they can affect the rest of our lives. It focuses on these decisions and these moments as times that can't be chased back, but that offer true learning moments if really appreciated.
Based on a real event in my life, this was an attempt to capture a memoir and turn it into a story so that someone reading could see how it applies to nyone. In this world where we're always trying to impress, the narrator is bombarded with over eager hopefuls and as she looks at them with scorn, the scorn soon turns upon herself.

Stories
Writing these stories was a challenge to myself. I have always done reflective, descriptive, pondering and winding pieces. I have a whimsical tone and use pretty words. The realm of story creation was untried by me and I soon found myself jumping plot gullies and climbing character mountains. How was I going to get the message across without explicitly saying it? How could I make the characters different from each other, well rounded, and still relatable? I wrote and revised, and changed it again and again. One of the most important processes that I learned throughout this project was the ablity to drastically rewrite and revise. Each edition was different, new, and closer to what I wanted it to be.
I wanted both of these stories to be in a different voice so that it almost seemed like the author was two different people. I wanted the message of my memoirs to come out in a story, and I wanted it to be interesting enough to finish, but relatable enough to think about long after eyes have left the page.
As I drafted and rewrote constantly, I've learned to base characters on people close to me, so that I can anticipate what they would do in the situations I have created, but that are also differnet enough from me so that my characters aren't all clones of myself. I've learned to let subject and environment say the message through thoughts and body language. I've learned the first steps of writing stories.
